The Tokyo Gaijin RFC has been attending the Manila 10's for 10 years now and it is a much anticipated event on the Tokyo Gaijin calendar. Preparations start many months in advance and Tomohiro Setoguchi must be heartily thnaked for all the hard work that he put into the event. There were the usual pull outs in the weeks before-hand, frustrating his efforts, but 6 players from outside Tokyo helped the team put together a healthy squad of 15 players.

The Tokyo Gaijin RFC were schooled by a much superior Supermen RFC in a 'friendly' match out at Inagi Sports Ground. The Gaijin were missing regular Captain Apisai Bati, vice captain Eamonn Murphy and a host of other players as they took an opportunity to get game time for new players and 'green' players against a full strength Supermen RFC. It was always going to be tough for the Gaijin with such a 'nuts and bolts' team against one of Tokyo's top amateur teams. Supermen had been knocked out of the Champions League by Mandara, who the Gaijin beat last week, so they were keen to get back some lost pride and came out very strongly.

With all guns firing! That's how the Tokyo Gaijin RFC knew Mandara (not Mandela but said the same way) would come out in their first Champion's Cup game (aka. Cup Winners Cup). And that's exactly what they did. The Gaijin, putting in a great defensive effort and riding on the individual brilliance of 18 year old Apisai Bati Junior, got home to take the match 19 v 10.
